History of ChatGPT

ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, is a remarkable creation built upon OpenAI’s foundational large language models (LLMs), such as GPT-4 and its predecessors. It has completely transformed the landscape of artificial intelligence, demonstrating that machines can comprehend the intricacies of human language and engage in meaningful interactions.

OpenAI introduced an early demo of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. The chatbot swiftly gained immense popularity on various social media platforms, with users enthusiastically sharing fascinating examples of its capabilities. From assisting with travel planning to crafting captivating fables and even programming computer code, ChatGPT showcased its remarkable versatility. Within five days, the chatbot garnered a vast user base of over one million individuals, firmly establishing its influence and appeal.

OpenAI dates back to December 2015 when Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman formed the organization. Each member brought their unique expertise in technology entrepreneurship, machine learning, and software engineering, united by a shared mission to advance artificial intelligence in a manner that benefits humanity.

While Elon Musk’s involvement with OpenAI has transitioned over time, the organization continues to thrive under its current CEO, Sam Altman.

ChatGPT milestones

June 2018: GPT-1 was introduced, representing the first iteration of the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) series. With 117 million parameters, it served as the foundational architecture for ChatGPT. GPT-1 showcased the potential of unsupervised learning in language understanding tasks. It demonstrated the power of language modeling by predicting the next word in a sentence using books as training data.

February 2019: GPT-2 was released, marking a significant leap forward in text generation capabilities. With an impressive 1.5 billion parameters, GPT-2 exhibited improved coherence and generated multi-paragraph text that seemed more human-like than previous models. However, due to concerns about potential misuse, GPT-2 was initially withheld from public release. OpenAI conducted a staged rollout to study and mitigate potential risks associated with the model’s capabilities.

June 2020: The release of GPT-3 marked a groundbreaking moment in AI. Trained on a staggering 175 billion parameters, GPT-3 showcased advanced text-generation abilities and demonstrated its proficiency in various language-related tasks. It surpassed its predecessors regarding response quality, factual knowledge, and language translation. GPT-3 captured public attention as users marveled at its ability to draft emails, write articles, create poetry, and even generate programming code. This version allowed individuals to interact directly with ChatGPT, experiencing firsthand the power of AI-driven conversation.

Present: GPT-4, the latest iteration of the series, continues the trajectory of exponential improvement. Building upon the achievements of its predecessors, GPT-4 introduces several notable enhancements. These include improved model alignment, ensuring the chatbot accurately follows user intentions and produces more contextually relevant responses.

Offensive or dangerous output generation is minimized, addressing biased or inappropriate content concerns. Factual accuracy is increased, enabling more reliable and accurate information retrieval. GPT-4 also exhibits better steerability, allowing it to adapt its behavior according to user requests. Additionally, it incorporates the capability to search the internet in real time, expanding the scope of information it can retrieve and incorporate into its responses.

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT is built on a type of computer program called a Large Language Model (LLM). These models learn from a massive amount of online information to generate new and unique responses instead of repeating pre-written answers. Unlike older chatbots, they are not designed for specific tasks and are much more intelligent.

The name ChatGPT itself reveals its purpose. GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, and it refers to the underlying model used in ChatGPT. The model was trained on various web content, such as websites, books, social media, and news articles. It was fine-tuned using supervised learning and Reinforcement Learning From Human Feedback (RLHF). OpenAI highlights that the involvement of human AI trainers in this process sets ChatGPT apart and makes it unique.

What are ChatGPT’s limitations?

Despite its impressive appearance, ChatGPT does have some limitations. One area for improvement is that it needs to work on answering questions phrased in a specific way. It would be best if you reworded the question for it to understand. Another limitation is that the quality of its responses can be lacking. Sometimes, the reactions may sound plausible but make no practical sense or be overly wordy.

Instead of asking for clarification on unclear questions, the model guesses the meaning and provides answers based on that guess. This can lead to unintended or incorrect responses.

Another major area for improvement is ChatGPT’s knowledge is based on data until 2021. It needs an awareness of recent events or news.

However, these limitations have been addressed to some extent through ChatGPT’s integration with Bing as its default search engine. A Bing plugin allows ChatGPT to search the internet and provide citations. Currently, the Bing plugin is available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

What can ChatGPT do?

Using ChatGPT is like having a conversation with an intelligent computer program. The beauty of ChatGPT lies in its simplicity of use. You only need to type in your message; ChatGPT will generate an informative response.

It’s important to be creative and explore how it responds to different prompts. If the answer you receive doesn’t quite meet your expectations, don’t worry. Adjust your question or provide additional instructions to guide ChatGPT toward the desired result. And you don’t need to repeat your prompts since ChatGPT remembers the context of previous questions, allowing you to refine your queries and build upon previous conversations rather than starting from scratch each time.

ChatGPT

For example, typing “Explain how trees grow” will give a more detailed result than “How do trees grow.” However, both inquiries will give fairly detailed results.

ChatGPT

You can take it further by giving ChatGPT more guidance about style or tone, “Explain how trees grow like an elementary school teacher.”

ChatGPT

Try using ChatGPT in your everyday life or work tasks to see how it can assist you. You can ask it to write emails, create business proposals, suggest fun date night ideas, or even help with a best man’s speech. As long as it doesn’t violate explicit or illegal content rules, ChatGPT will do its best to fulfill your requests.

It’s important to note that there is a possibility of ChatGPT providing incorrect information. OpenAI acknowledges that such instances are rare but can occur due to what they call AI “hallucinations.”

Furthermore, you can continue asking ChatGPT questions until you close your browser or reset the conversation. The conversations are saved in the sidebar, automatically naming each chat. You can manage these chats, renaming or deleting them as needed. If necessary, you can even “hide” specific chats.
